What is a GST bill?
Under GST, a registered supplier generally issues a tax invoice containing prescribed details about the supplier, recipient, items, tax rates and amounts. Retailers may issue a bill of supply in specific cases; this guide focuses on the common tax invoice format.
GST bill format — key sections
- Supplier name, address and GSTIN
- Invoice number and date
- Customer name, address and GSTIN (if registered)

- HSN/SAC codes

Information required
GSTIN
15-character GST identification number for registered businesses.
Invoice number
Unique serial number for the financial year.
Date
Date of issue of the invoice.
HSN/SAC
Harmonized System of Nomenclature for goods or Service Accounting Code for services.
Taxable value
Value on which GST is calculated after discounts.
CGST, SGST and IGST
For intra-state supplies, tax is split into CGST and SGST. For inter-state supplies, IGST applies.
Total amount
Taxable value plus applicable taxes and any round-off.
